Lake District & Northumberland '27

April 17–25, 2027

A week in the countryside of northern England, where the light changes by the minute and the weather does whatever it pleases with my photography plans.

We’ll photograph the morning mist over the lakes of the Lake District, mountain passes, and old stone walls lost in the spring greenery. And then the north: the Northumberland coast, wide beaches, the tide lapping at castles rising from the sea, wind-swept dunes, and stark industrial structures on the edge of the North Sea.

This expedition isn't about ticking off a list of iconic landmarks.

It’s about working with light, landscapes, and conditions that change faster in Britain than photographic plans.

Nature of the expedition

Northumberland & Lake District is not a typical photography workshop that involves rushing from one famous location to another.

This is a photography expedition for photographers who want to truly work with light, atmosphere, and the changing conditions of the British Isles.

We’ll take our time with the photography. We’ll often arrive at a location well before the best light appears. We’ll wait for a change in the weather, the tide, fog, or that brief moment when the landscape is completely transformed for a few minutes.

The weather in Britain is no obstacle. He is the co-author of the photograph.

Rain softens the landscape, fog clears away the clutter, and the wind brings movement to the grass, the sea, and the sky. It is often in moments like these that the most powerful photographs of the entire expedition are taken.

We won’t be doing any extreme hiking or trying to cover as many locations as possible. More important than quantity is the ability to understand the scene, simplify it, and respond to whatever conditions arise.

I’ll help you not only with the technical aspects, but especially with the photographic ones: how to see a scene, simplify it, and turn it into a powerful photograph.

The goal of the expedition is to help you grow both technically and creatively. To bring back photos you can truly be proud of.

At the same time, however, it’s also a vacation centered around a hobby we share. Time spent in the countryside, in the company of like-minded people who share a passion for photography, light, and travel.

Lake District

The Lake District is one of the most picturesque regions in England. A landscape of ancient stone walls, mountain passes, solitary trees, and lakes nestled among dramatic slopes.

For centuries, this region has been shaped by pastoralism, slate mining, and the harsh life in the mountains. The landscape here does not feel like a backdrop, but rather like something that has long been used, inhabited, and slowly shaped by the weather and human labor. To this day, the landscape feels very authentic: narrow roads between stone walls, farms built of local stone, small villages lost among the hills, and weather that can change completely several times in the course of a single morning.

It is precisely the light and the ever-changing conditions that make the Lake District such a compelling destination for photographers.

For example, we will visit:

  • Buttermere

  • Blea Tarn

  • Wastwater

  • Derwentwater

  • Castlerigg Stone Circle

  • Langdale

  • Honister Pass

Northumberland

The minimalist coastline of northern England offers a completely different landscape: open spaces, wide beaches, historic castles rising directly from the sea, and the rugged atmosphere of the North Sea.

For centuries, Northumberland served as a border region between England and Scotland. To this day, the coastline is dotted with castles that once protected trade routes and the entire kingdom from attacks from the north.

But alongside its historic buildings, the northeast of England has another side: an industrial coastline linked to coal mining, the shipping industry, and the trade that once fueled the British Empire. Old harbors, piers, and rusting structures now stand silently by the sea, which rolls on without any particular interest in human ambitions.

It is precisely this combination of history, rugged coastline, and ever-changing light that gives Northumberland its unique atmosphere.

For example, we will be taking photos of:

  • Bamburgh Castle

  • Dunstanburgh Castle

  • Holy Island

  • Embleton Bay

  • Amble Harbour

  • Old port structures and piers along the North Sea coast

  • Minimalist industrial scenes combining the sea, rust, concrete, and northern light

The expedition will also include drone operations where conditions and regulations permit.

This expedition is ideal for photographers who:

  • want to improve their use of light and composition

  • They want to advance both technically and creatively

  • They aren't looking for a large-scale workshop

The physical demands of the expedition are low to moderate.

Most locations are within a short walk of 30–60 minutes. There are no extreme climbs or long mountain crossings ahead of us.

"Dane, I also join in thanking you for a fabulously planned, organized, and above all, wonderfully led event. Thank you for the advice regarding both the technical aspects and, above all, the composition. I have much to think about and my head is full of experiences. Thanks to the group for the great atmosphere, I felt excellent and had a great time. You are all very inspiring, but above all, great people. I would gladly go with such a group again in the future. I will be following you. Have a safe trip home."

"Dane, thanks again for the super workshop, it was great, the location, the time of year, the light. Well organized, great accommodation. When you organize another Scotland somewhere else, or the UK, I'm in. Take care, and good luck."
