All you need to know

USA National Parks - Death Valley, Joshua Tree and Yosemite 2025

Each stop on our journey will have a different mood, and we will be able to try out a range of photographic techniques - panorama, HDR, IR and night photography, for which the remote deserts of the American Southwest with minimal cloud cover are ideal.

If you want to advance your landscape photography, spend almost 2 weeks shooting in the company of like-minded photographers, or work on long exposures or panoramic shots with the support of an instructor, don't miss this trip. Investing time in active photography will advance your work much more than investing in a new camera or lens.

The goal of each of my expeditions is for the participants to enjoy the trip, bring back the best possible photographs, and improve their photographic skills - primarily composition, working with light, and technically relevant aspects of working on location. Together, we will adapt the program to this, and I will be available to the participants at all locations as they need.

The itinerary is subject to change according to the current flight schedule and local conditions.

Accommodation and meals:

Accommodation in double rooms in 3-star hotels or cottages is included in the expedition price. A single room is available on request for an additional fee.

Meals are not included in the expedition price. We will cater for ourselves during the day depending on the weather and local conditions in order to maximize photographic opportunities and light. Food can be purchased everywhere we go, or there is a choice of restaurants in the place of accommodation.

Who is the expedition suitable for:

The expedition is suitable for beginners and advanced photographers who want to improve their on-location work and discover new places and sceneries. This is not a sightseeing trip and the priority is landscape photography. Every morning and evening we will be together on location to take advantage of the best light, while we will use the days primarily for transfers between locations.

All photographic locations are easily accessible - a few minutes walk. More difficult to reach locations can be included by agreement within the group.

What equipment to bring:

You certainly don't need to buy a better camera or exotic lenses that you don't normally shoot with.

We will be shooting in locations that do not require special equipment and you will definitely enjoy the expedition with your current equipment. In addition to a camera and lenses covering at least the 24-70mm range, you will definitely need a tripod, which will allow you to shoot during sunrise and sunset. I highly recommend a polarizing filter and ideally a set of ND and graduated filters. If you need advice on equipment, please write to me.

Suitable equipment for the expedition:

  • Quality tripod and head

  • Lenses in order of usefulness for me personally:

    • mid-range zoom, typically 24-70mm

    • wide-angle lens or zoom, typically 16-35mm

    • a telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range will also come in handy

  • Filters:

    • polarizing, graduated, ideally system - ND filter and ideally a strong ND filter for long exposures (ND1000 etc) - highly recommended, helps even during possibly very bad weather

  • Comfortable backpack for photo equipment

  • Charger and spare battery

  • Remote control

  • Headlamp, thermos

  • Optics and sensor cleaning kit

What to wear:

Most days we will be in the mountains or deserts. At the end of September it can freeze in the mountains in the morning and after sunset. The deserts will have cold mornings and hot, sunny days.

Expect the weather to be very dry and temperatures between -5 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees max. 45 degrees Celsius in Death Valley.

You will definitely enjoy short and long sports trousers, t-shirts/shirts and an insulating layer primarily against rain and cold.
